The Sumo 19SE is more than just a monitor
The Sumo 19SE is more than just a monitor a review by Richard Inman
The Sumo 19SE is more than just a monitor. It’s a complete on-set solution, capable of meeting the demands of the most challenging shoots and providing the flexibility required by today’s dynamic production environments. It boasts a suite of impressive features that make it a standout in the market, but what sets it apart is its combination of rugged durability and cutting-edge tech.
Right off the bat, the Sumo 19SE impresses with its 1200nit HDR touchscreen. This high-brightness screen makes it a reliable partner in any location, from the darkest interiors to the brightest exteriors. It covers the DCI-P3 color gamut, ensuring accurate color representation for those perfect shots.
Where the Sumo 19SE truly shines is in its recording capabilities. It’s a beast capable of capturing Apple ProRes RAW up to 6Kp30 and preserving the pristine quality of the data from the camera sensor. Also, it’s equipped to record 10-bit ProRes and DNx up to 4Kp60, supporting multiple inputs via SDI. It even extends its recording times with ProRes LT and DNxHD 36 support. What’s more, it’s compatible with a variety of professional cameras, including the Sony FS series, Canon C300MKII/C500, and Panasonic EVA-1/Varicam LT. In other words, it’s a device that will play well with others in your gear house.
But the Sumo 19SE goes beyond recording. With four independent inputs, it can also be used to switch and record four ISO streams simultaneously. It also provides a fifth “program” channel of your switched feed. The switching is asynchronous, eliminating the need for expensive locked sources and allowing the use of more affordable cameras that do not support timecode/genlock inputs.
And let’s not forget about the audio. The Sumo 19SE is fitted with two stereo-balanced XLR inputs with 48V phantom power, perfect for connecting two external microphones with balanced analog audio recording and monitoring. Mic or line-level audio can be seamlessly synchronized with embedded audio from HDMI and SDI sources.
In conclusion, the Atomos Sumo 19SE is not just a monitor but a comprehensive on-set solution that puts control and flexibility right at your fingertips. It’s a testament to Atomos’ commitment to pushing boundaries and equipping filmmakers with the tools they need to make their visions come to life. With the Sumo 19SE, Atomos is indeed rewriting the rules of the game.
