LEIGHTON BUZZARD, GBR: Custom Consoles announces the completion of Module-R and MDesk-Technical control room desks plus MediaWall monitor displays for a newly opened 975 square metre production hub in Scotland. The project was supervised by Hampshire-based Dega Broadcast Systems.

“This was a large commission by any standards with this new resource set to play a major role in Scotland’s creative media industry,” comments Dega Broadcast Director John Cleaver. “Module-R and MediaWall both give us the ability to specify solutions with the required features and dimensions from a standard range of modules. A Custom Consoles MDesk-Technical was specified for one suite where internal hardware and cable requirements were limited.”

“The eight desks supplied for this project include seven from the Module-R series, comprising three for the production control room, two for the lighting and video control room, plus a grams desk and reverb trolley for the sound control room,” details Custom Consoles Sales Manager Gary Fuller. “Largest of the eight is the front desk for the production control room. This is a 6.7 metre wide in-line unit comprising 13 bays. A vision switcher is embedded into the work surface across the central three bays. Monitor displays on individually adjustable support arms are mounted at several locations along the rear edge of the desk. Pre-drilled mounting points can be accessed at any time to accommodate additional monitors. Eight of the bays incorporate 2U desktop equipment pods, supplemented by an 8U-capacity pod above the right-hand bay. The desk is supported by six of our standard extruded aluminium legs, all of which come with integral cable ducts. The eighth desk, MDesk-Technical, was integrated into the recording operations room.”

“We are very pleased to have been selected to partner in this very high profile enterprise,” adds Custom Consoles Managing Director Neil Reed. “In addition to the desks, we have produced and installed a 1.5 metre wide MediaWall multiscreen monitor mount in the studio control room, a 5.2 metre wide mount in the LV control room and a 6.2 metre wide mount in the production control room. Largest of these supports is a five wide by two high edge-to-edge array of 48 inch monitor display panels above a horizontal row of eight 24 inch monitors, also in edge-to-edge configuration.”

Custom Consoles assembled all the monitor walls and desks on site prior to the electronic equipment being integrated by the Dega Broadcast team.

A mix-and-matchable control room furniture system, Custom Consoles’ Module-R series enables aesthetically attractive and long-life broadcast control-room furniture to be configured to meet specific shapes and dimensions from a selection of high-quality pods, base sections, 19 inch rack housings, worktops, end-panel modules and legs. Coordinated desktop-level pods are available as single-bay sections with up 10U chassis capacity. The series includes high-quality single-bay, dual-bay and triple-bay desk sections with front or rear access, work surfaces in matching widths, corner desk sections with integral worktops, slide-out keyboard drawers, equipment pods with 3, 6 or 8U capacity, storage pedestals and equipment bays. Custom Consoles also offers a Module-R Lite variant for use in latest-generation IT-based studios or where space is at a premium. The front to back depth of Module-R Lite is 95 cm compared with the 120 cm depth of Module-R.

MediaWall is a video and audio monitor support frame system providing the same combination of structural rigidity and operational versatility as Module-R. Flat-screen video displays of practically any size can be mounted in almost any configuration. Incorporating height-adjustable horizontal beams and T-slot mounts, MediaWall is fully adjustable to ensure optimal sight lines. Individual or multiple frames can be used in self-supporting mode or coupled directly to the studio wall. Video display screens can be positioned so that the edges meet exactly to form a continuous horizontal display limited only by the monitor panel bezel. Monitor signal and power cables are fully concealed and can enter or leave the structure at any desired point.

MDesk-Technical furniture is designed for applications where there is no requirement to accommodate large equipment within the body of the desk. Each MDesk-Technical frame includes full-width cable management with easy access via removable panels. Cable access to the work surface is via a full desk width brush strip. Monitor mounting points spaced at intervals along the rear of the desk can be accessed by removing their plastic plugs. Cables can be routed through the vertical support legs or via cable boxes. Also included in MDesk-Technical is a continuous cable brush strip for desktop devices. Extruded aluminium legs with powder-coated feet are provided as standard, combining light weight and high structural rigidity.
